Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal chaired, Wednesday in Algiers, the official opening ceremony of the 2nd session of African Union’s Specialized Technical Committee on Social Development, Labour and Employment (STC-SDLE II), in presence of AU Commissioner for Social Affairs Amira Fadhel, and ministerial delegations and experts of the continent.
The session, held by the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security in coordination with the AU, under the high patronage of President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika, would focus on the theme “Investment in Employment and Social Security for Harnessing the Demographic Dividend.”
In his opening address, Sellal said that the continuous improvement of the AU bodies has made of this specialized Committee “an active and efficient platform of dialogue and cooperation in many areas, including unemployment, labour market, social dialogue, integration of women, fight against child labour, occupational medicine and social security coverage.”
In this regard, the Premier underlined that the theme chosen for this session is “very important” and “in line with the commitment of African governments to make of the specificities of the continent, sources of strength, not a brake on development.”
The main mission of the STC-SDLE II is to prepare for AU projects and programmes and to submit them to the AU Executive Council.
The Committee, which meets every two years, is also in charge of assessing the implementation of the decisions of AU bodies.
