The European Union (EU), the African Union (AU) and the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC) have approved the dispatch of international observers at Algeria’s request for the legislative elections of 4 May, said Wednesday in Algiers Chairman of the High Independent Authority for Election Monitoring (HIISE), Abdelouahab Derbal.
In a statement to APS on the sidelines of an HIISSE assessment meeting, Derbal said “Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ramtane Lamamra sent, on behalf of Algeria, an invitation to the EU for the dispatch of observers for the forthcoming legislative elections. The EU has approved the demand.”
“The AU and OIC also accepted the demand,” he added, recalling that the Arab League announced that nearly 110 observers would head for Algeria by late April.
Derbal said that “this shows Algeria’s willingness to ensure fair and credible elections.”
